Aside from crocheting, I am also a high school math teacher. A little while back, I had my Geometry students compete in a fun game called “Dance, Dance, Transversal,” where some brave volunteers showed their best dance moves while practicing identifying angles formed by two lines cut by a transversal. As you can probably guess, teenagers aren’t always the most excited about doing silly activities in front of their friends, so I had to draw them in to the game with some pretty strong bait. I told them that the grand prize in each class would be a stuffed animal of their choice made by me.

One of my students that won chose a stegosaurus, so I went looking for a great stegosaurus pattern! While searching, I found a whole collection of dinosaur stuffed toy patterns by KeinMaker that I fell in love with instantly. My dinosaur-loving son also approved of the patterns I picked, so I knew this pattern would be perfect.

The No-Sew Stegosaurus pattern by KeinMaker is an easy and quick pattern that is great for any dinosaur-loving kiddo or adult. The design is made with bulky yarn for a quick make time. You can easily customize this adorable stegosaurus to fit any color scheme, and the end result is super cute and cuddly. I am really excited to add more dinosaurs to my inventory and to my son’s stuffed dinosaur collection with this adorable pattern.

What Do I Need to Make a No-Sew Stegosaurus?

K10.5/6.5mm Crochet Hook – I used my Clover Amour Ergonomic Hook

Material Notes:

To make a stegosaurus, you will need two colors of a bulky (5 weight) yarn. The pattern does not specify a specific brand, so I used my favorite – Bernat Blanket, which is a super bulky #6 yarn. You could use a different bulky yarn. While I have not yet tried out this pattern in a different weight of yarn, I have no reason to believe it wouldn’t come out nicely with a different weight of yarn as long as you use a proper hook size. This project doesn’t use a lot of yarn, so you should easily be able to get two (or more) finished stegosaurus toys out of one skein of blanket yarn.

The pattern calls for an E4/3.5mm crochet hook. I have very tight tension when crocheting, so I normally go with a much larger hook size when working with bulky yarn like this. I personally used a K10.5/6.5mm hook and had no issues. You will want to make sure you choose a hook size that will allow your stitches to be tight enough together that stuffing does not come out between your stitches when you stuff your finished piece.

To assist you with making sure your rounds have the correct counts, you may want to use stitch markers.

In addition to your yarn and crochet hook, you will also need some stuffing and embellishments. If you have a small or medium bag of stuffing, you should be able to firmly stuff your stegosaurus with some stuffing left over. For embellishments, the pattern calls for 8 mm plastic safety eyes. I opted for 15 mm felt eyes instead, as that is what I prefer to use on my stuffed toys. I also used a very small amount of pink worsted weight yarn to add some color right under the eyes, but that part is optional.

How Long Does It Take to Make a No-Sew Stegosaurus?

The finished stegosaurus took me about 2 hours to complete from the beginning to the end.

How Big is the Finished No-Sew Stegosaurus?

The finished no-sew stegosaurus measured just under 5 inches wide, 11 inches long, and 5 inches tall.

Gauge:

I used a K10.5/6.5mm hook with blanket yarn. A magic circle with 6 single crochets measured approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter.

Gauge is not critical in this type of project. You mainly just want to make sure that there are not gaps between stitches so that the stuffing does not come through. If you notice gaps, you will want to go down a hook size.

Pattern Notes:

The No-Sew Stegosaurus pattern is relatively beginner-friendly and includes links to a video tutorial as well as clear pictures of important steps. The pattern is really well-written and easy to read. This pattern is clearly well-tested and includes all the important information you would want in a pattern. My favorite part of the pattern is the color-coding within the pattern to inform you which color to use for each section.

To make the stegosaurus, you will need to have knowledge of working in continuous rounds, single crochets, increases, decreases, double crochets, and bobble stitches. This construction allows the entire body of the stegosaurus to be made in one continuous piece. I found this part of the pattern pretty easy. To assist you with making sure your rounds have the correct counts, you may want to use stitch markers.

The spikes on the back of the stegosaurus are crocheted right onto the body. I found this part a little tricky when I tried to do it freehand. I actually ended up pulling out all of my stitches and trying a second time to make sure the spikes were close enough together. To be clear, my mistake was in not clearly following the directions. If you look at the pattern, the pictures show pins placed on the back and the pattern explains where to place the spikes. Just take time with this part, as I learned it can easily look wrong if you aren’t careful about the placement of the spikes.

I am really happy with how this stegosaurus turned out, and I can’t wait to make more! I am also really excited to make some other dinosaurs using KeinMaker’s designs. At my son’s request, I already made the volcano that goes with the dinosaur collection.
